Imagine your day as a 6th grade student walking into the classroom knowing you can only read on a 3rd grade level and your math has come up to a 2nd grade level. You look to your teacher to have all the tools and resources you will need to catch up and a become successful middle school student.
Our school is a diversified elementary school with a population of 100% on the free lunch program.
We are considered an extreme poverty school. The 6th grade students come to school each day with the desire to learn and improve their reading, math and social skills. Some of the students put in a full day at school and then go to a job directly after, either at a taco truck, a tire shop, or landscaping, etc. They come from families who have very little and want the best for their child. Each day they are welcomed into the classroom and are eager to learn and grow. The students reading and math levels range from pre-k up to 12th grade. We have a balanced reading program in place. However, the supplemental reading and math from non-fiction articles we can read in magazines would help the students to advance at a faster pace.
My Project
Each day the students have a 90-minute reading program and a 90- minute math program in the morning. In the afternoon we target language arts, math review skills, science and social studies. The magazines will allow the students the opportunity to read non-fiction, real world text, solving math problems they could encounter on a daily basis. The magazines will also help the students with their reading comprehension while keeping reading interesting and up-to-date. By incorporating these magazines it will allow the teacher to have an additional resource to help the students move reading levels and achieve the reading level they need to be successful.
This project will impact each of the 50+ student in the 6th grade class.
It will allow the students the ability to see real world problems, to learn from them, to help solve them, and to utilize the skills they are learning in their scheduled reading and math classes. The students are eager to raise their reading and math levels. These magazines will be one more tool in their tool belt to reach their goals!
