Our Charter School is a new, inquiry-based elementary school in Brooklyn, NY. Our young students have a daily 60-minute reading workshop time each day. In order to engage fully in our developmentally appropriate curriculum, they need thought-provoking and appropriate books to read.
Our student body is as diverse as the neighborhood in Brooklyn where we are located.
Our students come from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds and many of them speak languages other than English. In addition to racial and ethnic diversity, our students come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
We are an inclusive school and we welcome all types of learners into our school with open arms. All of our classrooms have one general education teacher and one special education teacher to support the diverse needs of our students.
We are an inquiry-based elementary school that believes in making sure that all students are able to explore the world around them by engaging in a real-life inquiry projects. We focus on projects that involve sustainability and the arts, and we use the surrounding community as our classroom.
As a brand new school started by three teachers, we do not have a large budget for purchasing all of the materials needed in our classroom.
My Project
Young children are very concrete and need developmentally-appropriate materials in order to practice the reading skills they learn in their small guided reading groups.
Our students need books that are leveled and appropriate for emergent readers. They also need a variety of books from different genres and about varying topics to support their interests.
Our kindergarten and first grade students will have the opportunity to choose approximately 10 books to keep in their own book bag each week. They will read these books at home and at school. With 108 students coming to our school in September, we need plenty of books to make sure all of our students remain interested and have enough engaging reading material.
Your contribution will ensure that our diverse group of kindergarten and first grade students have access to high quality and appropriate reading material from the very beginning of their time at our new school.
All students will have access to these books through our shared leveled library and they will visit the shared library at least once a week.
