My Students
Help us share what we know! My kindergartners will be using art and photography to create leveled books about how to be healthy.
My kindergarten students attend an urban Expeditionary Learning school in Illinois.
The school is a charter school in its sixth year of existence. Being a young school means that we are lacking many resources, especially related to art and technology that other schools have spent years amassing. Students at this school learn through in-depth investigations into topics that matter to them. Each learning expedition culminates with the creation of a product that allows children to become teachers of the topic they have spent so much time learning about. This year my students will be spending the second half of the school year learning about the human body and how to stay healthy. The products that they create will be a series of books written and illustrated by them about their studies.
My Project
My students will be spending five months learning about the human body and how to be healthy. They will study organs and the body systems, nutrition and the food groups. They will participate in healthy cooking lessons and develop recipes to share with their families. They will learn various forms of exercise. They will work with nutritionists, doctors, fitness experts and athletes to become experts on health and wellness. This year my students will be integrating art, photography and literacy to create leveled books about health topics. They will photograph healthy food, document cooking experiences, and exercise activities using the new cameras. They will use the fancy colored pencils to create renderings of human body parts and scan them into the computer. These photos and drawings will be compiled into leveled reading books with text written by the students. They will use the new printer to print and compile the books and distribute them to other classrooms in the school.
Your contribution to this project will help 50 kindergartners become professional artists and published authors.
You will be supporting education that is authentic and meaningful and integrates multiple forms of art into a scientific study. Through this project the kindergarten students will become empowered to share their knowledge with the world and to understand the purpose of learning.
