This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time something you studied in school came to life? We are a small and close-knit middle school whose students come from a wide variety of backgrounds but all share an enthusiasm for learning about the world around them.

Working in the poorest congressional district in the country, my students come in at a wide range of academic levels and my school has developed a wide range of programs to meet their academic and emotional needs.

We meet in small advisory groups to make sure every student has at least one adult in the school paying close attention to their academic and social progress. This also gives students a space where the are comfortable talking about issues that concern them.

My Project

We are requesting tickets and transportation to see the documentary "He Named Me Malala," which will be released in October in New York. Students will also participate in lessons and discussion around the issues raised in the film before and after the trip.

This trip will be an incredible opportunity for our 7th and 8th graders, who studied Malala Yousafzai last year in English Language Arts and read excerpts of her speech to the UN.

Seeing this documentary and the speech in theaters will make their work come to life and be a much more powerful experience for all of them.
