Do you remember picking up a book and looking at the beautiful illustrations and wishing you could read the words? My students have just started Kindergarten and picture books help capture their attention and child-friendly magazines help them begin that new adventure-READING!
My Kindergarten students are five years old, and everything about school is exciting and new.
We are a Title 1 school with several ESL students. Last year there were three Kinder classrooms - this Kinder classroom was added just this year and we need books! The few shelves we have in our room are bare ... but we could also use a shelf to house those new picture books; so choosing a book by it's cover is easier! They love being read to, but I want each child to share my love of reading when they move on to first grade, and to be successful, they need books and age appropriate magazines. Scholastic weekly magazines will assist in teaching reading in whole group and small groups and when the lessons are complete, the children will have something to take home to practice reading to their families; and it will be all theirs!
My Project
My room was empty when I was hired just three weeks ago. But, with the help of other teachers and the books I have acquired over the years the room has come together, but to make it complete-we need picture books and other reading materials. To continue sharing my passion for reading with the children I know they would love a kid sized bookshelf to see the covers of the great picture books I am requesting. Our school teaches Arabic and I think having a few picture books in dual language will not only help the children with their English, but also with their Arabic.
Also, the subscription to the Scholastic weekly magazines, will be exciting for the children. Each week they will get their very own personal magazine that we can read together as a class, but, when we are finished reading in class, they will be able to take the magazine home and share it with their family, giving them practice and more confidence in reading.
Even though technology is taking over the book industry, young children still LOVE holding a book and turning the pages!
