My Students

“Autism … offers a chance for us to glimpse an awe-filled vision of the world that might otherwise pass us by,” Dr. Colin Zimbleman, Ph.D. Hatching and caring for chicks will be an awe-filled experience that my students will never forget.

I teach a 6th-8th grade autistic support class in Philadelphia.

My students come from different backgrounds and have varying social and academic abilities. We approach everyday with an attitude that everyone can learn and be successful in their own way. This often means trying new approaches and ideas to meet the unique needs of each child. Although children with autism are all different, the students in my classroom share a nurturing demeanor.

My Project

Our class has been offered hatching eggs with the assurance that the chicks will have a good home to return to when they are too big to live in our classroom. We are in need of classroom incubator and brooder kits to make this awesome experience possible. A classroom hatching project will provide hands-on daily interaction with the development and care of chicks from eggs to hatchlings. This project will also provide social interaction opportunities when general education students from our school come to visit our chicks.

These materials will help my students to have a hands-on understanding of the hatching process as well as provide vital lessons in responsibility and animal nurturing.

I cannot express how much the materials and this experience will mean to my students. Since our school is located in the city, some of my students may never otherwise have an opportunity to be around and care for animals. I am hopeful that this venture will hatch a memory that lasts a lifetime for my students.
