This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our community, there are limited after-school opportunities for our students. I am starting a knitting club in which students and staff can both participate. Students will learn a skill that can benefit their family and community, and have an opportunity to positively interact with adults.

Our community has a high percentage of low-income families.

Students have limited opportunities for after school activities and our middle school is trying to change that! Knitting club will allow students time to positively interact with adults and learn a new skill.

My Project

With these knitting needles, I will be able to teach students a new skill and fun activity. They will learn to knit projects for their family and friends and will have a rewarding activity to keep them engaged and active after school. These needles will allow students to make projects for themselves, their families, and their communities.

I learned how to knit recently, and have been able to share my skill with students.

Many have responded positively and have been able to make gifts for their friends and families. They can take pride in learning a skill and seeing a tangible result. Knitting integrates hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, pattern awareness and mathematical ability. Students will be able to participate in a fun, rewarding after school activity that will reinforce skills they've learned in school.
