A typical day in my science class involves students gaining hands-on experience with the few lab supplies that we have. These middle school students are excited about being in a science class and they want to get their hands on something real however we lack the resources needed to accomplish this.
Legacy Preparatory Academy, formerly Mount Pleasant Middle School is a middle school serving students in grades 6, 7, and 8, with a population of around 100 students.
The school is unique, not only because of its small size, but also its student demographics. Ninety-eight percent of Legacy Prep's student population is eligible to receive free or reduced price lunch and over 90% of students reside in single parent households. Of the 100 students at Legacy Prep, 88% are Black, 4% are White, 6% are Hispanic and 2% are Multiracial.
The students will use the materials to explore science. Science has the ability to excite and amaze students. When students are engaged in hands-on activities, they are applying what they have learned. Students learn more when they are active participants in their learning. I will use these materials to show students that science can be fun. These science materials correlate with the standards that students are expected to know for the state exam. I will setup stations around my classroom to allow the students to experiment and explore concepts in depth; from microscopes, pulleys and 3-D models to fun flip books, vocabulary cards and full-color charts that make key concepts easy to grasp.
Students in low income neighborhoods and labeled disadvantaged fail to pursue careers in the scientific field.
These materials will allow my students to explore science. You may be inspiring a future doctor, nurse, or scientist by supporting this project.
