My goal for the students who enter my classroom is that they will gain the knowledge and ability to successfully adapt basic concrete math skills. They need the tangible, hands-on experiences to gain meaningful knowledge of math concepts.
I have a room full of energetic second graders.
They are eager to learn in meaningful experiences. The more active we are in the classroom the better. My students love when we take concepts on paper and put them into action or make them real. These activities give the students a learning experience that is more easily conceived and retained. In our school, we encourage students to explore concepts through investigation and hands on learning, I believe this approach leads to a happy and successful atmosphere.
My Project
My students will investigate math concepts such as money, fractions and geometry using these vibrant, hands-on materials. Students will be able to compose and decompose money amounts in real life simulations. They will use the base ten blocks to gain thourough knowledge of standard form numbers which will translate to a number of further math skills. Using these donated items they will explore the aspects of essential life skills by gaining knowledge in small and whole group learning experiences.
Having these items in the classroom will give the students opportunities for meaningful learning experiences that will be carried into long term knowledge through kinesthetic learning.
The experiences my students will gain from these manipulatives will greatly enhance their knowledge and applications into real life situation, pointing them to future success.
