In my room, students use art to think like a scientist, learn animal classification and forge connections with the core curriculum to spark learning. Students who might otherwise struggle are able to succeed using science and art in hands-on activities.
My goal for my students is to help them develop a sense of discovery, learn the importance of animal habitats and ecosystems, and explore how each animal has a place in the food chain.
Art becomes the vehicle for their experimentation and creativity. I am fortunate to work with every student in our K-5 school. My passion is integrating art with the core curriculum so projects are presented to each grade and then are differentiated for each grade level. By integrating art with science, my students learn how to think through observation and discover how they can be better stewards of our planet. Being a high-poverty school, many of my students do not have the opportunity to develop their interests, skills, or life connections other than at school. Our school is a community - students collaborate on projects, as do teachers. I am always looking for ways to keep the joy of learning alive with art as the springboard!
My Project
We are very limited on art supplies. I have requested construction paper, markers, staplers, and other supplies for our integrated animal classification science and art unit. With the addition of these materials, my students will be able to explore how animals develop characteristics to help them survive in their specific habitat. We will learn about the food chain and food web and how important it is for each creature. My projects connect across the curriculum which is highly beneficial, promotes curiosity and reinforces deeper learning. Students will be encouraged to discuss connections between how their actions and lifestyles affect animals and their environment, research problems and issues, and then brainstorm solutions. By incorporating art into an interactive, exciting animal classification game and artwork, students will experience thought-provoking, meaningful connections.
When you donate to my project, you will be providing our students a chance to gain in depth knowledge about a variety of different animals and their importance in different ecosystems.
You will help our children experience science in a creative, engaging way. You will give them a chance to realize how their actions impact the world around them. Your help will bring smiles to over 400 eager and unique students, and give them the tools to succeed. You will be empowering students through art.
