My Students
"Mathematics may not teach us how to add love or minus hate. But it gives us every reason to hope that every problem has a solution." ~Unknown
I have a very special group of students.
These students are a very diverse group of students from ethnics to academic ability. We are at a Title I school where most students are considered economically disadvantaged. We are in a lower class to middle class area of our town, however, you would never know the difference between anyone at our wonderful school. We are a BIG and LOVING family at our school and every one is treated like a member of this giant family. The community rallies around the school and supports us deeply.
My Project
My students need math tools, such as number lines, place value kits, number dice, etc., to use in small, guided math groups to solve 3rd grade math skills and concepts. My students learn math in what is called a "Guided Math" framework. This is where students spend most of the time working in small group rather than in a big, whole class group. I rotate them through stations, one of them being my "Teacher Table." Here, students will use practice their current math skill or concept with the help of the teacher guiding them through their learning. Manipulatives are very important to have during this time for students to be able to have visuals to help connect and anchor their learning to something more concrete. This allows me to see their thinking much more quickly and to be able to correct and guide misconceptions right then before they practice that skill independently.
These donations of math manipulatives will increase the amount of tools that students can use in the classroom to help them with their growth in math.
We need more manipulatives that we can use in small group and that they can use in their station work, checking their understanding of the math skill/concept.
