Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to learn about science. They are natural scientists and very inquisitive. They always want to know more, more, more! Unfortunately, we have a limited number of books that go along with our science unit on Animals. They need more resources to satisfy their hunger for knowledge.
I teach at an urban school, with 98% of our students coming from low-income families, and about 50% of our students are English language learners.
Our school is in a densely populated area and we are currently at 206% capacity. This causes hardship for the students and teachers, with overcrowded classrooms and having to have classes in trailers, hallways, the auditorium-anywhere we can find room. We have wonderful parents and a staff who do their best to support the students under difficult circumstances. Despite these hardships, the students strive for success.
My Project
With bilingual books available for science class, my students will be able to explore on their own. They will improve their research skills, their scientific knowledge, and their reading skills all at the same time. My students will be able to go to our class library and find a book on the topic we are studying instead of having to wait for someone to finish using the one book we currently have. They will have the option to read fiction and nonfiction, and make comparisons. They will be able to do research projects with multiple sources coming right from our own room. They will also be able to take books home to share with their families in their native languages, in order to increase parental involvement in learning.
By donating to this project, you will be giving my students the ability to become independent learners and start on the path to becoming lifelong scientists.
They will discover, at a young age, that science is fun and interesting, and that people outside of their families and teachers care about them and are willing to support them. In this way, this project will benefit them for years to come.
