My Students

How many of you were that child who the teacher kept saying to sit down, but just wanted to be out of your seat moving? So many of our students learn the best by moving.

Our school is a primary school with students ranging from pre-K to second grade.

More than 80% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. They come to school already at a disadvantage from their poor family home life. Many come from single parent homes where the mother is doing her best to provide for her children. They come to school wanting to learn, but when we teach them the "old fashion way" of sitting at desks and doing worksheets, they become frustrated and start to fall even further behind other children their age.

My Project

Developmentally these students tend to learn best by movement. Brain research has shown that students will remember things better when it is associated with a movement or has some sort of rhythm with it like a song. By including the music CD's and activity books, I will have more resources to help my students remember the material I am presenting to them. The number line will allow my students learning to add and subtract, to be able to incorporate different movement activities with the skills of using a number line. Children who have special needs such as ADD or ADHD will benefit from the squeeze balls during instruction.

With the materials you would provide, my students would have more opportunities to learn essential skills in math and reading a different way, through movement.

All those students who struggle in these areas, would have a new world open to them. We say that education needs to change. That is what I am trying to do. I am trying to provide the best education for my students by giving them what they need.
