Please help a high school math teacher obtain graphing calculators for the students to use in becoming proficient with technology needed for standardized tests (SAT, ACT, Praxis, etc) and college (two year or four year). With the rapid advancement in technology, graphing calculators are a must in the high school math classroom. Today, textbooks, resources and hands-on experiments are designed with the graphing calculator in mind. In order for students to be successful, they must be able to properly use these hand held computers. The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculator has the following capabilities to enhance learning in all math areas: Algebra I - function graphing, inequalities, polynomials, quadratics, basic functions Geometry - angles, Cabri Junior, hyperbolic functions Algebra II - sequence graphing, tables, matrices, programming, conics Statistics - statistical plotting, regression features, inferential statistics and distributions, probability, random number generator, scatter plots, box and whisker plots Precalculus/Calculus - parametric graphing, polar graphing Applications - using CBL/CBR, data collection, amortization, financial functions, study cards, compound interest Science - periodic table and graphing features of the periodic table The capabilities are numerous and the applications allow the students to make the math come alive. Being able to navigate and properly use the graphing calculator is required for any math class in college. I teach math at a communities in schools high school. The school was designed as a high school dropout prevention program and targets students 9-12 across the district. The high school focuses on specific individualized needs of at-risk students and provides a nurturing learning environment and class sizes from 12-16. Our school was built in 1951 and little renovation has been done. We are lacking technology and do not have enough calculators for all students. The ones that we do have are old and do not have the same capabilities as the TI-84 silver edition. I want to be able to prepare my students for any test or college level class. In order to prepare my students for challenging math courses and college I need the necessary resources. The graphing calculators are a visual modality for teaching can show the students many more concepts. Teachers have the ease of simply connecting the graphing calculators into the video input of any conventional TV, VCR, or projector, and creating an engaging learning environment for students. I am requesting 2 graphing calculators. I have no way to visibly show the students the keystrokes I use, nor what is projected on the calculator screen. It is frustrating for a math teacher not having the essential technology to teach. It is difficult for me to verbally explain when most students need to see to process information. With the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculators, I can display graphs on the TV and students can easily see the keystrokes and graphs thereby reducing confusion. This tool would be a lifesaver for my classroom and learning would increase exponentially. Please help me as I take on the challenge of educating tomorrow’s future.
