My Students
"I hate reading." "Reading is too hard or boring." Working with all struggling readers, I hear these statements many times at the beginning of the school year. One way to quickly change my students' minds is through graphic novels.
My students are seventh graders at a predominantly African American middle school in St.
Louis, Missouri. All of my students are just barely at or below their grade level in reading. Many also have reading or writing disabilities and receive extra support in my classroom. It is so important for struggling readers to have books that are Just Right for them, and I am working hard to provide that for them.
My Project
Graphic novels are the best "starter" novels for middle school students. They're an easy to read format, and they are a great, sneaky way to hook kids into reading. With struggling readers or reluctant readers, it's important to find that perfect starter novel to hook them into reading. With a wide variety of graphic novels and some of the newest, hottest titles, I can find books for my readers that still think reading isn't for them.
The addition of these graphic novels will provide more opportunities for my students to get graphically addicted to both graphic novels and reading!
My struggling readers will have books that can hook them and build a love of reading!
