My students need graphic novels to motivate them to read on their own. We need copies of The Lightening Thief, A Wrinkle in Time, Coraline, The March and 6th Grade Ninja.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are on the edge of becoming readers. They know how to read, but they have not yet bought into the concept of reading for pleasure. My boys, especially, have expressed an interest in comic books. I believe that these graphic novels will spark interest, and show my boys the joy of reading.
I teach a group of highly energetic, bright, brilliant and funny 4th graders.
We are a highly diverse school with a population that experiences high levels of poverty. We are located in a small urban community. My students love to be leaders and crave recognition for their efforts. We strive to make that recognition come from behavioral and academic achievement.
My Project
If you visit our classroom on any given day, you will find students all over our room sitting on little chairs on the floor reading books for pleasure, while other students meet in Literature Circles to discuss their Book Group selection. I have around ten boys, however, who have not yet bought into the concept of reading for pleasure. When I talk to them about their interests, and what they might want to read, they keep coming back to the idea of comic books.
These graphic novels will capture my boys' interests, and draw them into the world of reading. Many of these graphic novels are based on books I have in my classroom. It is my hope that after reading the graphic novels, my boys will be drawn to the original books as well, and that our silent reading time will become a joyful time for them.
Your generous donation will allow me to provide my boys with graphic novels that will open their eyes to the joys of reading.
My students crave stories, but they are not used to getting their stories through reading. With these graphic novels, my students will become not only people who CAN read, but also people who DO read. A person who reads for pleasure can read for any purpose. Doors open for readers. Your kindness will help me to open those doors for my students.
