My Students

I work with students on enhancing and developing reading skills. We work on basic skills and applying those skills to reading. With sets of books appropriate to their reading levels, my students will be able to apply their reading skills in an authentic way when reading these quality books.

I work with small groups of students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.

We are at a charter school, which means our funding is more limited than a traditional public school. Our reading program consists mostly of materials bought and personally owned by the teachers. Through these leveled sets of books, my students will be able to discover the joy of reading, while applying their basic reading skills to developing their decoding and fluency skills.

My Project

For this particular project I have chosen to focus on my primary students (grades kindergarten through second). Through the collections of leveled readers I have requested, my young students will be able to develop their skills in decoding and fluency. After learning and recognizing sound patterns in words, my students will be able to experience discovering those patterns through authentic experiences in literature with these books. In addition, each child in my small group will be able to have their own book to read, follow along as their peers read, or follow along as they listen to the accompanying CD. Rereading the same text in various ways will help the children develop their fluency skills. These titles are high quality literature, familiar titles, and friendly characters, which will help motivate the young children as they read.

The donations towards this project will enhance the reading program at our school by having a wide range of reading material available to all the students.

Through the use of quality literature, the students will develop their reading skills and will discover the joy that reading has to offer.
