My students need 3 GoPro Cameras to film their library activities, promote what they do in the library, and to use for school events, science classes, and more.
This is not your grandmother's library. Students are actively creating projects, using technology, and doing real world research. Students use library equipment throughout all courses--from science to sign language. We see our students learning to tell stories in more effective creative ways.
Our students are on the cusp of college and careers, in a large suburban high school.
We have a range of socioeconomic groups and students who have come here from other cultures. Video is an important medium for them in terms of learning and understanding concepts, and we want them to be proficient storytellers because that is so important to so many careers. Our students are willing to experiment and be creative when they have the tools that help them do so. Our district is supportive of technology but budgets are tighter than ever.
My Project
In the library, our students will use the cameras for projects such as foreign language videos, creating projects for English classes, and in the classroom, for teaching foreign language concepts. Also within the libraries in the district, students will use the cameras to document their "day in the library" -- a project to promote awareness of how important libraries are to their school. The library lends out equipment to every teacher on campus--so students in all subjects from science to band to American Sign Language to Digital Media--will be able to utilize the cameras.
Engaging students in learning is a creative act.
Engaging students in the 21st century means introducing them to and helping them learn new technologies and how to use them in storytelling. Using these cameras in the library to show how the library is used will help share with parents the impacts of the library. And using them in classrooms for focused assignments helps students deepen their storytelling skills with visual media.
