My Students

"Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance." ~ Samuel Johnson Students in my classroom will be working on solving challenging, real-world mathematics problems in cooperative groups. They will need to keep detailed records of their problem-solving strategies.

I teach in an urban middle school that is both racially and socioeconomically diverse.

Forty-two percent of our students come from low-income families and twenty-three percent of our students are English Language Learners. My 6th grade students are energetic and excited learners. They are eager to experience the increase in independence that comes with being a middle school student. My students are definitely not lacking enthusiasm or a desire to learn, however they often need guidance with organizing their thoughts and ideas on paper. This year my team teacher and I will be piloting a program to help 6th graders learn a variety of beneficial organizational strategies. One of the aspects of the program will be learning to keep detailed records of their work in mathematics.

My Project

My students will be using these durable graphing notebooks throughout the school year to keep track of their problem-solving strategies in math. Our real-world math curriculum presents students with a variety of challenging problems. These problems often cannot be solved in a single step, and students may need to attempt a problem multiple times using different strategies before they are able to come up with a solution. This makes it imperative that students work together to keep detailed records of their work. Specifically, these graphing notebooks will aid students in creating tables, drawing diagrams, and keeping track of place value.

Your donation to this project will open the door for students to experience success in 6th grade math.

The notebooks will help provide the necessary scaffolding for students to improve their organizational skills and strategies. Over time, we hope these notebooks will help students develop a more positive mindset towards math as they persevere in their problem-solving by keeping detailed records of their math work.
