My Students

"When words fail, Music speaks". My largest class this year is starting at 70 students in the Chorus room. I will teach sight-reading, composition, improvisation and breathing techniques in one lesson. Students will learn history and culture as well as foreign language from one piece of music.

My students live in a rural community.

There are no major theaters or areas within the county limits. As students must travel 60-90 minutes to the closest city, many of them have not been to a professional music performance. My students are in 6-8th grades and from all socio-economic levels. My school is the largest in the district and I teach all students at all levels.

My Project

One of the biggest aspects of my classroom is the community the students build in the 3 years they have together. Students make friends and form positive peer groups that have been proven to keep them away from the negative influences in the community. We are accepting of all student regardless of ability. I have had students tell me that being in Chorus "saved their life". These materials will allow students to for collaboration groups to practice classroom music together. The MP3 players will be loaded with practice tracks and historical reference tracks (i.e. Mozart "Eine Kliene Nactmusic" for the Classical period). For differentiation, students will be grouped by their area of need and will be given a listening station. For hygiene, students will be asked to bring their own headphones from home. These listening stations are a starting point to a wonderful, collaborative project!

Presently, students have to wait patiently and quietly for the teacher to instruct each group at a time.

These listening centers will allow all students to work at the same time, building the knowledge exponentially.Students will be able to learn at their own pace, with guidance from the teacher instead of waiting on the teacher.
