Getting Real about Nonfiction

My students need high quality non fiction texts such as The Story of Ruby Bridges, Throw Your Tooth on the Roof, and From Seed to Plant.

My Students

80% of what we have to read and write in college and as adults is non-fiction text. If most of what we read and write for life is non fiction, students need more practice learning how to navigate, comprehend, talk about, and write about non-fiction text and its specific features.

My sensational second graders have the world at their fingertips.

They are six and seven year olds at a Title I school in California. Under new administration, our school is making very exciting academic growth. Our student achievement is at an all time high and it is a very exciting time for our students. Many of my kiddos are English language learners whose parents speak limited English. This makes reading practice at home a challenge. I am focused on using every instructional minute I have with these kids to help them become readers! I want to provide them with access and the tools needed to be fluent readers of non-fiction text.

My Project

I am requesting class sets of The Story of Ruby Bridges and From Seed to Plant as well as one copy of Throw Your Tooth on the Roof to be used as a read aloud. These books have been labeled as Common Core exemplar texts. Common Core aims to raise the bar on the academic rigor and push text complexity in the books we ask students to read. The Story of Ruby Bridges is a true story of an African American girl who faced adversity and overcame it. I can only imagine the rich conversations we can have around the content of this story and all the writing it will inspire. The book From Seed to Plant is a well written book about the plant life cycle that ties directly to the reading we will do in our science text books. This access to multiple resources about the same topic taps directly into the goal that CCSS aims to achieve; pushing students to read multiple resources, compare and contrast them, and talk about the content using evidence.

With the roll out of Common Core State Standards, we are joining together in our commitment to raising the bar for students.

If people are expected to successfully read and then analyze, synthesize, and apply understanding of non-fiction texts, we need to start early building foundational skills. I can't wait to use these high quality non-fiction texts with my Second graders! Thank you for considering my project!
