My Students
For the short time that we get our students outside, we have to take turns on the school's playground. Every other week we are left on an empty field with no equipment to use. The first grade students need balls, Frisbees, and jump ropes to get active with.
We are a first grade classroom in the heart of our city.
Many of our students come from low income families and we are a Title One school. There is sometimes little support at home due to a large population of English Language Learners that we have. Many of our children go right home to electronics or the television therefore, physical activity is limited. My hope is to help the students get active!
My Project
My students need equipment like flying discs and balls for the weeks we play on the field at recess. Having outdoor equipment will help to eliminate problems while at recess. The students will be able to organize games of kickball, soccer, and football. Others will be able to work on much needed gross motor skills which do not often get addressed at home.
The academics expected of six and seven-year-olds are quite rigorous.
Kids are working from the time they get in until lunchtime and return to work immediately after the 15 minute recess period they are allotted. Having equipment will give them the opportunity to burn off energy and be ready to work all afternoon!
