Our classroom has a unique makeup of students with a variety of sensory, gross motor, and social-emotional needs. This equipment will fill some of the sensory needs our students experience daily that cannot be met without specialized large gross motor equipment.
Our students range in ages from 2.5 to 6 years old with a variety of special education needs including autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, speech and language disorders, oppositional disorder, early childhood developmental delay, ADHD, and a variety of other mental health disorders not yet diagnosed.
To fulfill our students social- emotional and behavioral needs this gross motor and sensory time gives them the opportunity to calm down, interact and be ready to learn.
Our school is located in a suburb of Detroit and has an ever evolving population with an increasing amount of lower income and more at-risk students coming into our school yearly. Within our elementary school we have six special education classrooms. We have limited space amount of space in our school for gross motor for all students and have began to use the hallway and adjoining classrooms to fill the sensory and gross motor need of our students with special needs.
My Project
These gross motor and sensory materials will help to fulfill our students social- emotional and behavioral needs and gives them the opportunity to calm down, learn to follow directions, interact with their peers and be ready to learn academic and speech skills necessary to their overall development.
These materials will be used in the hallway and adjoining rooms daily. Designated areas will be sectioned off for them to use the equipment and focus on specific gross motor, fine motor, and sensory skills. They will be able to learn to catch and throw a ball, climb through tunnels and obstacle courses, build strength in their core and upper and lower body muscles.
Our students will always have an opportunity to do gross motor and sensory activities daily, which will reduce anxiety and behavior issues occurring in the classroom.
This will also serve as motivation. They enjoy interacting with their peers and are learning academic skills that are necessary to their overall development.
