My Students

My goal for my students is to see the power of their own words - both orally and written. I want them to write with purpose - to keep in mind the tools a good writer uses when trying to convey a point. As good writers, I want them to be able to receive authentic, meaningful, SPEEDY feedback

Like many public schools, my school attracts both the haves and the have-nots, the privileged and the unprivileged.

I teach 8th grade English in a school that has mixed ability students. Students range from reading and writing well below grade level to being well above grade level, so they vary in their level of writing as well.

My Project

Students love to see their own work displayed. Much like any one of us, they are more invested when their own music is being used as a teaching tool. The document camera would be a very important tool to my classroom for this very reason. Students would use the tool to evaluate their own writing throughout the week. For example, I might typically assign students 4 open-ended paragraphs per night for homework. Multiply that by ninety-students, and there is an abundance of work to grade and evaluate. Therefore, to constructively give feedback on work would require an abstract piece of text or old student model. Using a document camera, students can see a classmate's work evaluated and make changes to their own. It will also hold students accountably for quality writing, as they will know their work may be evaluated in front of the class. Finally, it will instill a sense of pride and purpose in them when they see their work used and given feedback by myself and other classmates.

Students need to feel engaged in their content.

Students also need meaningful feedback. This piece of technology will allow for a variety of rigorous writing and editing activities.
