Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyone loves a good mystery! My students have been drawn in to geography through mystery skypes--where we learn about others, share about ourselves, and guess each others' respective geographical locations from clues. We're learning about the world so that we know how best to impact it. Join us!
"Curiouser and curiouser" may have been what Alice exclaimed, but it's a great way to describe my young learners and their interest in maps, geography and communicating with other cultures.
We are a rural K-5 school, and my students are all language learners--kids who know a lot about culture and diversity but are just starting to realize they do!
One of the most critical pieces of education today is the students' abilities to communicate their thinking and learning in ways that others understand. "Learning to teach" is one way to look at it.
Students in my classroom communicate with many other classrooms across the world, and we are involved with one learning project or another at any given time. Since these experiences are primarily tech-based, it's a challenge to grasp the marvel of it all when thinking about the distances involved. Maps, globes, and cameras to document our life and learning will help us turn the local into global, enhancing our understanding and communication.
My Project
We are requesting maps, a globe, and almanacs to drill down and learn more about the world we live in--not only the physical aspects, but the cultural, too. How people relate to each other depends deeply on how we communicate with each other, and how we express our understanding of world events.
A document camera, digital cameras, and a microphone will help us document our learning, and make it more relevant when the students know they will have an authentic audience.
The cameras will help students become more involved in posting on the classroom blog--pictures, video and commentary, and in telling their own stories. The document camera will help them share their writing, art, visual notes, etc., with the class, as well as during video chats with other students. As their teacher, a document camera will be especially useful for me to model writing expectations and how-to instructions for smaller projects. The microphone will help us during our video chats so we don't have to shout!
These global learning activities value social learning; they tap into and strengthen the social gifts our students are so eager to share, in an appropriate and relevant way.
Ceding photography control and decision-making to them--how they want to document learning, can be affirming on so many self-esteem levels. And, oh! The satisfaction that comes from addressing that "curiouser and curiouser" motivation which drives learning! Not sure about you, but it means the "world" to me and my students!
