My students need circuit sticker kits, circuit scribe kits, makey makey, little bits space kit, cubelets, MIP robot and small orange cones for our Gadget Girls STEM club.
Gadget Girls develop leadership, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills. Our goal is to empower girls at a young age to pursue STEM-related career pathways.
Gadget Girls is a place for girls to learn about engineering fields through exploration and design.
We are one of the largest campuses in our district, which provides unique challenges in meeting the specific needs of all students.
Additionally, we are a full Title I campus with a vibrant bilingual program. With 60% of our population on Free and Reduced lunch, we are faced with obstacles that require us to advocate passionately for our students. Many of our students have gaps in learning and background experiences which translate into a significant disadvantage when it comes to academic performance and eventually can lead to higher drop-out rates. We aspire to level the playing field for all of our students. Global trends are heading toward the areas of math, science and engineering, but our students are less and less likely to pursue these subjects after elementary school. We want to give them opportunities. to create, tinker and explore. We want to encourage our girls to be leaders in the classroom and empower them in an all girls STEM group.
My Project
This funding will help our "Gadget Girls" club focus on learning more about circuits and electronics and robotics. The girls will experiment with the Chibitronics Notebooks. These notebooks will teach the girls how to build series circuits, parallel circuits, and more, all while crafting with electricity. The guided directions and templates will make creating paper circuits a breeze! They'll even be able to program the LED stickers. Then we'll move on to drawing circuits with the Circuit Scribe Maker kits and playing with Cubelets to learn more about how circuits parallel with robotics. By combining the low tech journaling with high tech robotics, these girls will be well on their way to a career in science, technology, art, or engineering.
Our girls are innovators and problem solvers, and providing more tools will help them to thrive and grow into the scientists and engineers of the future.
By providing these girls with the tools they need, they will be able to continue to be the creative innovators that they are, as they discover and explore new concepts through hands-on experiences.
