My students need Frog Anatomy Kits! These science-loving, Title I learners need safe dissecting tools, gloves, and real frog bodies to further hands-on science learning.
Team Goude spends the day learning through collaboration and cooperative activities, sharing our thoughts, opinions, and wonderings. We learn about real professionals (scientists, authors, inventors, artists, business owners) in the real world; through them we are inspired to pursue our own dreams.
My students are from an urban area near a big city.
Many of them are under-resourced and lack experiences that most children have. Many have not traveled far outside their own neighborhoods. Ours is a neighborhood school, offering families many opportunities throughout the year to partner with the school and support their children's education.
My students are wildly motivated, love to learn, and are becoming experts at collaboration and teamwork. They care about their families, their classmates, their school, and their environment. Engaged and enthusiastic, they most enjoy lessons that are hands-on and authentic, encouraging dialogue, higher-level thinking, and real-life experiences. They have big dreams, and they know that if they work hard and persevere, they will reach their goals and realize their dreams.
My Project
What can I say? Team Goude is crazy for science! Our classroom library is mostly nonfiction, and I have purchased many books in the area of science. My students love learning about plants, animals, and especially the human body. They are fascinated with body systems and organs - they constantly check out books on the skeletal system, the brain, even the gross stuff like mucus and blood! When I mentioned the possibility of dissection, they begged me to find a way to make it work this year. They are so curious; they want to see for themselves where the organs are located and how they function together. When our Frog Anatomy Kits arrive, there will be much celebration, and our science period will immediately be adjusted to make room for this experience. We will make predictions and ask questions before our dissection lab. During the lab, we'll share our discoveries and "ah-ha!" moments. Afterward, we will write about what we learned and share our findings with other students.
The funding of the Frog Anatomy Dissection Kits project will allow my students to have an experience "like a real scientist." They will be able to see first-hand what they have only been able to read about in books.
I believe these materials and this experience will motivate them to continue their studies in science and even to continue to persevere in school. I know they will be further convinced that they can realize the dreams they have for their futures.
