Fund a Much Needed Acid Cabinet & Save Us from Corrosion!
My students need to use a variety of acids for lab activities and I need a place to store them safely. Our old cabinet has corroded and is creating an unsafe environment.
Ira Remsen, co-discoverer of saccharin and founder the Journal of the American Chemical Society, wrote that his passion for chemistry began when he experienced firsthand that "nitric acid acts upon copper." All students deserve such opportunities of discovery through hands on experimentation.
Our high school is a bastion of diversity where approximately 2300 students of all backgrounds find comfort, safety, and acceptance.
The Chemistry department is proud to serve 450 10th, 11th, and 12th graders taking regular, honors, and AP classes. We work hard to assure that chemistry is indeed a lab science where students can safely handle chemicals and conduct laboratory experiments in their quest for learning.
My Project
Our chemical storeroom houses a number of corrosive reagents in an old and decaying cabinet housed under an equally old and deteriorating counter/prep station. The fumes evaporating into the unventilated room are unpleasant at best. I hope to move the acids into a separate acid cabinet and then to replace the counter and sink to create a proper chemical preparation area. I will need to fund the cabinet first in order to request the other items.
Going back to the story of Ira Remsen, he describes his experiment with nitric acid and copper this way, "It was a revelation to me.
It resulted in a desire on my part to learn more about that remarkable kind of action." I want my students to experience the wonders of experimental chemistry in the same way. Please help me to do so in a safe working environment. It will begin with a new acid cabinet and hopefully lead to other needed repairs to our chemical store room and preparation area.
