Ms. Thompson from Washington DC is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need support in funding travel packages to South Africa.

My students and I have the privilege of being a part of the Embassy Adoption Program. Each year we partner with local embassies and embark on a study of the people, culture, and landscape of our adopted country.
My fifth graders are creative, outgoing, and brilliant.
They are residents of inner city Washington DC--southeast to be exact. They are wide eyed and curious and deserve the opportunity to broaden their horizons and secure their future as global leaders by traveling abroad.
This year our adopted country is South Africa! My students have completed multimedia research projects on the country and interviewed embassy representatives. Soon they will represent South Africa in a model United Nations debate. What better way to culminate our studies than to visit our adopted country! We are requesting support funding our experiential learning field trip. My students will first arrive in Johannesburg where they will spend 3 days engaging in various activities including visiting Nelson Mandela's former home and the Apartheid Museum. Next, they will spend 2 days at Kruger National Park where they will be led on a wildlife safari and visit Shangaan Village School. They will return to Johannesburg for a day. They will be led on a bush walk and explore Pilgrim's Rest. Finally, they will spend 4 days in Capetown where they will participate in a number of activities including visiting Nelson Mandela's prison quarters, the South Africa Museum, and a penguin colony.
Students will have the grand opportunity to connect what they are learning in the classroom to the real world.
Research shows that students who travel abroad have a significantly higher chance of obtaining a college degree. Their communication skills are strengthened and they receive the tools they need to become globally competent citizens. This is becoming increasingly important due to globalization. I would like my students to be competitive and competent in our changing world.
