From iCan't to iCan: Special Ed Learning Success with an iPad

My students need an iPad to open the door to technology that will increase student learning success in a special education classroom.

My Students

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire" - W.B. Yeats. Help me light the fire of my students to make them want to learn, give them confidence, and realize they "can".

My students are special education students in grades Kindergarten through third grade who spend most of their day in the regular education classroom.

However, they come to my resource class to get specialized instruction in their specific areas of need. They all have been identified with disabilities such as autism, attention deficit disorder, hearing impairments, medical disorders, and speech and language disorders, which make learning difficult and frustrating. Our school is growing, but is limited in technology to meet the students needs in my classroom.

My Project

Students in our classroom with these cognitive disabilities will use specific applications to target their reading, math, writing and social skills. Studies have shown that the use of iPads generally increases engagement and learning, and decreases negative behaviors in special education classrooms. It has also been found that students are able to work independently without constant prompting with the aid of tablets. My students struggle every day in the school environment, and often have the feeling that they will never be able to succeed like the other students in their classes. I will use the iPad I have requested to help the students gain the opportunity to succeed and shine. The iPad's large screen, plus a number of available apps designed for students like mine, will enable me to use the iPad to target specific student learning needs. It will be used in work stations, small group lessons, and as an assessment tool everyday. It will be used as a hands-on activity my students desperately need.

As technology explodes around us, special education classrooms are often overlooked, even though they are in the greatest need.

By donating to this iPad project you will be helping me give my students the tools that they need to make progress, enjoy learning, and most of all, see that they can succeed.
