Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine having to sit still in a hard plastic chair for seven hours a day? I know that it would be extremely difficult for me to do now and my eight year old self would have found it nearly impossible. It's no wonder then that my students constantly want to get out of their seats.
I'm a co-teacher for inclusive second and third grade students.
My two co-teachers and I are responsible for 48 students, 12 of whom are special education students, and 6 more of whom are undergoing the referral process and may be diagnosed by the end of the school-year. What has impressed me this year about our students is that they are really motivated to learn. They ask tons of questions and want to know about so many different things. Sadly though, they often have a hard time focusing for long enough to get their questions answered. As a teacher it is really upsetting to see kids trying so hard to learn but having to face the huge obstacle of their bodies just not cooperating with them. Some of them have been diagnosed with ADHD which is why they have trouble remaining in their seats and listening to the teacher for any more than a few minutes at a time. Others just say they have difficulty because their seats are so uncomfortable that they're distracted by it.
My Project
We are asking for your support to get cushions for our chairs. This will make the students so much more comfortable and increase their ability to focus. When they're not distracted by thinking about how much the chairs hurt and wanting to move, they will be better able to pay attention to instruction. Engagement is the key to learning and before you can teach someone something, you must first get their attention. I am asking for your help with this. If you're wondering whether this is a worthy project to donate to or not, please just think about your own life. How would you handle sitting in a hard plastic chair all day? How much would you be able to learn under this situation? Wouldn't a cushion make all the difference? You would be able to get more work done because your mind would be focused on your tasks if you weren't constantly fidgeting and trying to get comfortable. This is all I want for my students.
Cushions for our chairs would allow students to focus more on what is important - learning.
It may not seem like an absolute necessity, but it really is. Even now, I'm having a hard time concentrating on writing this because I'm sitting on a hard chair and it's bothering me. As a child, I can only imagine how much more overwhelming this feeling would be and how it would make it extremely difficult to concentrate and learn. I want to help my students by eliminating this problem. Please help!
