Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Students at my school come from all walks of urban city life. They range from grades 6 to 12, ages 12 to 18, 95% of whom are wards of the court or foster youth of color at or below the poverty line who have experienced trauma and violence in their lives.

The students are predominantly African American, followed by Latino, Samoan, Asian and Caucasian.

Many are English learners with academic skills far below grade level and a history of inconsistent school attendance. The average stay for a student is one month, though many stay well beyond that, some for more than a year or two.

My Project

I am requesting funds ($500) to help finance the design and lay out of Words Within the Walls, which will function both as a blank writing journal and book. I want this project to function in three ways. First, it will provide the students with blank pages so that they can actually write their own poems and stories in the book. One thing that has been apparent is the high number of students whose minds were starving to express themselves. This journal will be the outlet for that creative expression. They will be able to put the pencil to the paper and express themselves in the form of poems, stories, letters, songs, and thoughts in the journal. Second, the journal will function as an anthology as well; it will feature some wonderful poems that the students have written throughout the year. Finally, I want the journal to be used as a source of inspiration for the students.

One thing that I have noticed from my years at the Juvenile Justice Center is the increasing number of students that ask me if I can bring them a yellow legal pad to write in during their free time.

One thing that a lot of the students struggle with is writers block. They have the paper in front of them but need that quick spark of inspiration. The journal would include prompts, topics, and ideas that will spark their creativity.
