Floor Seating and Organization for Our Classroom

My students need floor seating that properly supports their backs. We also need storage systems for our books and subject materials.

My Students

Empowering students through choice is key in my Responsive Classroom. Giving students options in where they do their work makes for highly effective learning. I believe in my students' potential and they can achieve through fun and engaging activities. I encourage reading by providing floor seating.

My students are an amazing group with great potential.

They have a high need for movement, but they could use some more structure/organization for obtaining classroom materials. The mission of our science and math focus elementary school is to actively engage all students in learning to achieve their full potential. My school is a Title 1 school located in Alexandria, VA and has a diverse population with more that 50% receiving free or reduced lunches. We are a Responsive Classroom school focused student-based learning. My goal is to provide an adaptive and flexible classroom environment which addresses the needs of all my learners.

My Project

These floor seats give my students an ergonomic option for reading during our language arts block which includes a reading workshop. While I run small guided reading groups, other students will be working on reading by themselves as well as reading to a buddy. By giving students the option to sit on the floor in comfortable positions, they will sustain attention to the material. Giving them a choice and these great floor seats makes my students want to read more than if they had to sit at a table all day! I am a new teacher to the school with a classroom that used to be a higher grade. These organizing bins will greatly help to organizer our library and classroom materials.

Research shows that the more time students are engaged in reading especially in the early years, the more successful they are in school and life.

Reading truly is fundamental! You can make a positive change in these children's lives by meeting their needs for flexible work spaces. Imagine if you were given the opportunity to choose where to work when you were in elementary school. Please help my classroom become more efficient and effective so that I can support my students' needs
