My Students
I am in my third year teaching in Appleton, Wisconsin and this is my most active class. They like to stand and work, sit on the floor with clipboards, and are often tipping (unsafe) on their chairs. My goal is of provide them with a variety of seating options to enhance learning and focus!
My school is one of the smaller school in my district with 340 students.
We have a very diverse cultural population with a variety of income levels. I have twenty-two fifth graders in my class. They are wonderful, caring, strong leaders. We work a lot on positive thinking and being mindful of how we can succeed. We have talked about flexible seating and they are very interested. Currently, I offer pillows and two comfortable chairs that students can use. They love it but the amount is limited and only nine students at a time are able to use those items. I also allow students to sit on the floor around the room whenever we have independent work time. I've noticed that when they are working around the room with or without a pillow their focus greatly increases. I want to offer more options to my students with the use of stability balls, stools and more pillows.
My Project
Research shows that allowing students to sit in comfortable, flexible seating options greatly enhances their focus. With a fulfilled project, my classroom would change quite a bit. I would be able to offer my students a variety of seating options based on what best meets their needs. Students would be able to use stability balls, pillows, stools and seat cushions to focus in our classroom. These options will allow them to become more comfortable, find a responsible working space and get the most out of our work times and classroom activities.
My project will make a difference because student needs will be met.
My students will be able to work with a seating option that allows them to focus and stay comfortable. Both of which are needed to produce quality work. When I think about how I, as an adult, like to sit and work, it is not in a plastic chair. I like to work on the floor or in a comfortable rolling chair and I believe that children should be offered the same.
