"Lights out" may be a familiar saying when it is time to put the books down for the night.
My classroom is an energy filled, sponge-like mix of boys and girls wanting to learn more, more, more!
There are 9 boys and 11 girls in the classroom, with a school consisting of a Title I, 70%+ free and reduced nature, but one would never know with the character building traits that are carried out each day by the students!
My Project
You may wonder what Flashlight Friday is? Flashlight Friday came about as a reward for consistently receiving compliments as a group from other teachers and students. Upon one experience, each Friday has become a Flashlight Friday, with students reading via flashlights, if they are able to bring one from home or borrow one. Not all students are able to do this, but we still read with the lights out and use of the lights from the windows. We would like to step up our Flashlight Friday to include our parents and invite them in to read with us every Friday after lunch. Our goal is 60 or more minutes of reading each day, but our Flashlight Friday is just another way to create an air of excitement for reading! By obtaining enough flashlights for each student to use each Friday, and a few more comfy places to sit (we currently have a park bench and a rocking chair), we hope to involve our parents as well to share in our quest for great reading!
Flashlights and comfy pillows will open the doors for yet another way to put excitement and desire of students into the world of reading, all while incorporating parent involvement with their child!
What a great way to cuddle up and share a book with a child! I suppose a fireplace is out of the question!
