My Students

"Tell me, and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand." Native American Proverb. This is more true in Science than in any other subject. Hands on involvement is the key to student success in the science classroom.

I teach 6th grade middle school science.

I have approximately 125 students between 5 classes, two being advanced science students. Our school is located in a low income area that was hit extremely hard by the housing and construction downfall. The students are excited to learn and thrive in discovery and inquiry style lessons. Hands on approach to teaching at this grade is the most effective. Students will understand and retain information much better with hands on activities. One of the most asked questions on the first day of class is, "Do we get to do a dissection?" Unfortunately due to funding I was not able to give them an answer. You donations will give them this opportunity. Fish, animal and plant cell models, and colored pencils will allow students to participate in hands on experience.

My Project

This fish dissection activity will help the students learn about organ systems as well as individual organs. We live in Florida and many students have never seen a real fish or touched one. This lab allows students to explore cell structure and function. They will learn the differences between animal cells and plant cells. These concepts are extremely difficult for 6th grade students to master. Many different lessons with different types of interaction, showing the material in many different ways, will ensure that students can master the content. Science is about getting messy and remembering the lab experience for the rest of your life. Dissections give the students that experience.

Reading about science in a book, just simply does not work with children.

I am trying to provide an environment that allows for discovery and inquiry in a Science education. By donating to this project the students will use the colored pencils to draw and diagram fish dissection. They will use the organ poster and plant and animal cell models to identify difference between the animal world and plant world. Thank you for your support.
