My Students
Do you like to sit on a hard floor when you read for enjoyment? In an uncomfortable chair at your kitchen table? On the concrete patio around a pool? No, you probably like to curl up in your favorite squishy, soft chair or even stretch out on your pillow soft bed. First graders feel the same!
The majority of my students come from low income families.
Almost 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch and some are even homeless. Many students come to school with very few positive life experiences. Most do not have books at home and several do not even have that comfy chair or bed to curl up in to read a book.
My Project
The only way to become a better reader is to read more. This year I have implemented a reading structure that has my students reading daily to develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently. This daily practice will lead my students to a lifetime of literacy independence. Currently we only have 1 soft comfy chair and one kid size rocking chair to use during our independent reading time. This means all of the other students have to sit on the hard floor or in our uncomfortable plastic chairs!
Having more beanbag chairs, soft mats and a jungle rug will provide my students with more comfortable seating options. They will be even more excited for independent reading time! Excitement about reading will lead to love of reading!
Students learn best when they are comfortable and actively engaged in the activity they are working on.
Your support with this project will help my students be more comfortable during independent reading time! Please help me foster an excitement and love of reading in my first graders!
