First Graders Need To Experience The Wonder Of Geodes!
My students need to discover the wonder of Geodes. We need a Smithsonian Rock and Gem dig, Break you own Geodes kits, Geometry Rock Detectives kit, and more!
One of my cherished childhood memories was going to the county fair and picking out a geode to open. I still remember the wonder of seeing the beauty inside what essentially looks like a rock. I want to give this memory to my students.
I am a First Grade teacher in a Title I school located in the Bronx, New York.
My students are awesome six year olds who are fascinated by simply everything. However, living in an overcrowded city doesn't allow for many opportunities for studying rocks. I crave giving them this experience. I can just imagine the looks on their faces when they get to crack open the gigantic geode and see the crystal formations that lurk inside or their faces when we go on a geode dig.
My Project
Imagine a group of six year old children in deep discussion over a rock. Yes, I said it, a ROCK! They will study the size and texture of the rock. They will also draw before and after pictures of the rock. Plus, when we grow a geode, they will be able to draw and photograph each stage of development. But, most importantly, they will predict what the center of the rock will look like.
I am positive most of my students will say, "it will be ugly or it will look just like the outside of the rock." Well, they are in for the shock of a lifetime. That rock is a geode, and it is beautiful on the inside. Perhaps we might include lessons connecting that the beauty of people should be judged on what is on their inside, just like geodes. Having bags of geodes will ensure everyone will get a great geode to take home.
My students will be able to experience a rock dig using the Geode rock dig kit.
This is definitely something that would be unique. We can also read about the rocks with our book about crystals. But, most importantly, consider the fact that a whole group of children will now develop a love of Science through the study of rocks. Imagine the child that keeps their geode on the bedroom shelf always studying and thinking about the possibilities that are open to them because of this project.
