Do you remember when you first realized that you loved to read? Kids love to read when reading feels worthwhile, when the books is interesting, when it's not frustratingly hard, and not boringly easy. I need better books in my classroom!
I teach in the most diverse zip code in the nation - SE Seattle.
We have an extremely high poverty rate in my class. Some of the children in my class don't have access to many books at home. We have autism inclusion program students. We have many immigrant and refugee students - lots of non-native speakers of English. We have kids with learning disabilities and behavioral issues. Even though we face many challenges, these are the nicest, sweetest kids you will ever meet. They love to learn and I feel lucky to be their teacher!
My Project
One of my biggest goals as a teacher is to get kids to LOVE to read. As soon as they decide they like reading, they are set to become lifelong readers and lifelong learners. In my mind, the key to getting kids to decide they like reading is to have books that they love. First off, that means INTERESTING books. Second, that means that I don't want kids being frustrated. If books are too hard, kids will give up. If they are too easy, kids get bored. If books are at their "just right" reading level and are interesting, kids will get hooked on reading.
I am requesting sets of nonfiction high interest books at various reading levels. I want each kid in my room to have a great choice of books at their perfect reading level. I want books that challenge the kids to think.
I am so excited at the prospect of adding these books to our classroom library.
These are great, high interest books and the kids will be so excited to read them. I so appreciate your generosity and kindness.
Thank you!
