First Graders in the Quest to Prevent Bullying with Science
My students need 5 copies of "Bullying in Schools," 3 demo robots and an assortment of books, readers and activities in Science and Math, so they will be prepared to collaborate in Science and advance in STEM.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts." is an invitation from Einstein to observe, and feel an appreciation for the world around us. It is an invitation to be curious and explore. My students need to learn the importance of collaboration as they explore Science.
Einstein and many other scientists of his time liked to be considered citizens of the world and collaborate in their research.
Imagine if they had the resources we have now. In fact, the Internet was first established as a tool to collaborate in research. Our space exploration is a great example on how science developments are used to better quality of life, and how collaboration makes it possible to achieve great things. We no longer live in isolation.
My students need to start thinking as global citizens and to learn the importance of teamwork. I teach 24 eager first graders, in a Title I school. Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of them are learning English as a second language and live in a high poverty area. One parent families, children being raised by grandparents, and parents working late hours are some of the difficulties facing our students. However challenged, my students are extremely motivated to learn and have curiosity to explore Science.
My Project
Public interest in science is high and increasing science literacy is a pre-condition for progress in the 21st century. First grade is a good place to start. This school year we followed closely the launch of the Curiosity, a rover built in California to explore Mars. We also saw the arrival of an old friend "The Endeavor" as we were honored by NASA to serve as its home.
Just recently we also learned about Hurricane Sandy and the devastation it created. We stressed the importance of precaution, controlling global warming, emergency preparedness and humanitarian aid. My students are starting to learn how important is to take care of the planet, cooperate with others, and their role as global citizens.
The book Bullying in Schools will help my students learn what a bully is and to stay away from bullies in the playground or in their neighborhood. As they see the model robots they will also understand the importance of recycling, reuse and will see an application of solar energy.
My first grade scientists will really benefit from having a book collection to appreciate the wonders around them, and the book Bullying in Schools and other character education books so they will reject bullying and will practice collaboration as they share their findings.
They will also get a close look at the use of solar energy in the model robots. Please help my current and future students get started with STEM and practice collaboration and teamwork.
