Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Curiosity is the name of the rover built in California and launched by NASA to explore Mars. Curiosity is also what motivates my first graders to explore science through reading. My first graders find science intriguing, but sometimes don't have material at their own reading level.
I teach 24 eager first graders, in a Title I school.
Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of them are learning English as a second language and live in a high poverty area. One parent families, children being raised by grandparents, and parents working late hours are some of the difficulties facing our students. However challenged, our students are extremely motivated to learn and have wonderful parents who want the best for them. They need as many literacy opportunities as possible and science is one topic appealing to them. They are starting to unveil the world around them and they are acquiring important literacy skills. I encourage my students to visit the public library but sometimes their parents don't have the time to take them there. My students need a set of books that they can take home each week in topics that they love to explore. I am requesting level appropriate books to make their reading practice more enjoyable.
My Project
Public interest in science is high and increasing science literacy is a pre-condition for progress in the 21st century. First grade is a good place to start. This month we joined organizations around the globe celebrating World Space Week and my students were asking questions about the Endeavor as it was coming back home in its 26th mission. They felt proud NASA selected California to be the home of that National treasure and they felt this as well as the Curiosity mission in Mars as two very intriguing topics to learn about. My first graders also love to learn about animals, plants, our solar system and this will be a great opportunity to hone their reading skills. At that early age, my students have an urgent need for home reinforcement and the practice they will gain will develop the literacy skills required in first grade.
My first grade scientists will really benefit from having a book collection they can take home every week to practice their reading while they explore a field they enjoy.
They need to get started with STEM. The also need the King collection and Bullying in Schools from Townsend Press to help in their social skills. This will also give them topics to discuss at home and at school and will serve in our writing assignments. Please help my current and future students discover the joy of reading.
