First grade students represent a wide range of abilities in mathematics. The rekenrek counting racks will support a range of learning styles, helping to deepen students' understanding of mathematical strategies.
Our school community celebrates diversity on many levels.
Our families represent a wide variety of cultures and ethnicities. Each classroom includes typically functioning students, students with special needs and English language learners. We are a Title 1 school, meaning that a significant portion of our families are living at or below the poverty line. We are also a barrier-free school, allowing physically challenged students to be equals in our loving school community.
My Project
Our school's math curriculum emphasizes the importance of hands-on, experiential learning. Rekenreks are an essential math tool for supporting a wide range of learners. The counters requested in this grant are essential in order to provide our students with developmentally-appropriate math activities to support their development of number sense. The materials requested will also enable students to meet the new common cores standards in math. Our goal is to enrich early mathematical thinking and problem solving skills.
