My Students

James Baldwin once wrote,"You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read." Many of my students encounter tremendous heartbreak on a daily basis. Books like the one I am requesting for this project will inspire and challenge my students to learn the art of empathy for others.

Brilliant.

Inquisitive. Passionate. These are but a few words that merely scratch the surface of who my students truly are. Some of my students are first-generation, those bravely pioneering the trail of being the first to graduate from high school. My students are opinionated, wildly talented, and wary of any who dare waste their time. Despite the fact that many are faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, they consistently show up ready and even demanding their right to learn. Our high school is only in its third year, working tirelessly to build a reputation on a campus that has a dark history of violence and low expectations.

My Project

I have requested one hundred copies of the book, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. This book is a culturally relevant text that will engage all readers who are all on varying reading levels. Students will complete a group project where they will work collaboratively to create detailed portrayals of different sections of the book. Six groups of 4-5 students will create presentations that include a summary of their section, an analysis of symbols and motifs, a close read of a significant passage from their section of the novel, and an explanation of how their section of the novel contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole. The project will culminate in a final essay.

All lives matter.

This is a phrase that sadly many of my students do not feel is true, especially when not reflected in literature they are expected to read in classrooms. By reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, my students will see themselves reflected in a piece of of award-winning literature, thus validating their existence and enabling them to see that they too matter.
