Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6 wonderful five and six year old students with autism in a high needs school. Our large, diverse district and students come from a variety of backgrounds, making it difficult to communicate with parents or guardians.

It is important for children with autism to follow a routine.

Typically in my kindergarten autism classroom, after a lesson I follow it with a fine motor activity (writing, cutting, gluing, putty, sand, shaving cream). Hands-on activities are a great way of getting children engaged in learning. Few of my students are nonverbal; therefore, we must use pictures for communication.

My Project

By gaining these materials, my students will have more space in the classroom, will be able to socialize using new toys, practice their handwriting and scissor skills, and will be able to use communication through the use of an iPad. The Lay On Me Blanket will provide my students with weighted pressure that helps calm and relax them. The organizer will create space in the classroom for students, impacting their gross motor and social skills.

My classroom would benefit from having all of these materials and will help make my students more successful.

They will improve their fine motor skills through the use of loop scissors and pencil grips. My students will also improve their social skills through the use of the train set. Having new cubbies in my classroom will benefit my students because of the amount of space we will have. All of these materials impact each child's sensory, social, gross and fine motor needs.
