Financial Literacy Using Science as a Starting Point

My students need these laptops to study the links between economics and the physical sciences.

My Students

As I push my students into higher-order thinking there is a need for different equipment in the classroom. In this case the equipment is technology and in particular laptops that can be shared by students for various graphing activities.

The school is over 65% free and/or reduced lunch.

The largest segment of the student population is African-American followed by Caucasian. The school does have many ethnic groups and the number of languages spoken by the students is in the double digits. My classes tend to reflect the school as well.

My Project

A few ideas include: graphs of cost of equipment in a science classroom and how often that particular item sells. graphs of equipment cost as a function of year to study inflation and the effects of off-shore labor on the costs of products. graphs of American-made versus imported items. There are many graphs that can be completed. The main emphasis is to get the students graphing using computers and software so they can focus on higher-level thinking by analyzing the graphs.

This project will allow students to learn graphing on a computer while also learning about economic concepts and developing more economic literacy.

Through the use of innovative lessons a unique twist on supply and demand curves can be studied.
