"Financial literacy is just as important in life as the other basics." - John W. Rodgers Jr.
I teach a bilingual classroom in an urban school district.
My students are an energetic group of Spanish-dominant students that spend half of the day learning in Spanish and half of the day learning in English. We are in a school that has three different learning strands: Dual Language Immersion, English only and Bilingual Education. We serve a very diverse population with over 60 percent of students living in poverty; almost all of the students in my class make up part of that 60 percent. We are also unique in that minority cultures make up the majority of our school population.
My Project
By creating a school store, students will build financial literacy through a hands on and fun approach. Students will be responsible for purchasing needed school supplies, paying rent for classroom use, and receiving a salary based on how well they perform their classroom jobs. They can receive an additional salary for working on safety patrol and being a member of strings. Biweekly, students will be paid, have to pay their bills as mentioned above and then be able to purchase goods from the school store. In addition to tangible items, students can purchase bonus time where they can complete a craft project, spend their recess building, using new toys donated by the project as well as purchase lunch with the teacher, no homework days, etc. By having a purpose in what we do, students will see the value in what they are doing, the materials they are using and practice their math skills at the same time!
This project will make a difference because it will teach students the value for their work.
They will learn how to balance a checkbook at an early age as well as see the effort it takes to manage money and reap the rewards of doing it well. My students need check registers, items to buy and interactive rewards.
