Fiber/Textile Artists Need Weaving Supplies

My students need art supplies such as yarn, drawing paper, and oil pastels to enrich our new visual arts program.

My Students

My students enjoy ART. They attend a middle school that has not had a visual arts program in several years. For this reason, they are excited to create just about anything! The problem is that we need supplies for the exploration of various art mediums.

The student population includes a majority of students living in high poverty.

Many speak English as a second language. Some students are new to the Charlotte area, others are new to our country. All of these young artists enjoy the creative outlet that the visual art program allows. They take pride in their work and want to create more. The supplies will allow them the construct looms, create fabric swatches, and design fiber art projects. They will explore weaving, dying fabric,and batik. The young artists will learn about artists and craftsmen with work in textile design. They will also explore art careers such as fashion designer, costume and set design.

My Project

My students will use the art supplies to explore textiles/fiber arts. The large looms will be for collaborative projects. The yarn, needles, and fabric will be used to construct weaving samples. They will be introduced to batik, weaving, tie dye and fiber/textile artists. They will learn about various art related careers. They will also learn about craftsmen who make a living creating textiles/fiber arts.

The funding of this project would mean bringing a visual art program to life.

Students will be able to explore more mediums and have materials to do so. They will be able to weave, dye, tread, and construct, using fabric, yarn and tread. They will have projects on display in the school and community.
