Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Music is truly the universal language that unites us all. When combined with movement and dance it can be a powerful force for learning as well as enjoyment and appreciation of the art itself. We need tambourines to help our students learn the music and art of capoeira.
My school is a small, urban middle school in the heart of a big city.
My 7th and 8th grade students are predominately Latino; first and second generation Americans. They are the children of hardworking, caring parents who do not have the resources to provide their kids with much more than the basic necessities.
My Project
We are teaching capoeira-an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of music and dance. One of the most important parts of capoeira is the music. Capoeira is played to the beat of the atabaque(drum) and the pandeiro (tambourine), which help keep time and set the time and rhythm of the game/dance. With so many students, we need multiple instruments for them to play so everyone can learn the rhythms and the songs. The children will learn to play and sing and will develop an appreciation for this beautiful and holistic artform.
Music inspires children and improves their performance across all academic areas.
especially in the crucial subjects of math and science. Teaching them capoeira will broaden their horizons, teach them about other cultures, and make their educational experience fuller and more rewarding. At a time where arts in the schools are threatened, a project like this will have a profound impact on my students.
