I teach my kids daily that “with knowledge anything is possible." It is through teaching and building phonics skills that I can help weld the two worlds of reading and writing together. Their knowledge increases as their ability to read and write grows.
I have sixteen spectacular students in my first-grade classroom.
Our school has 42% English-language learners and 57% of students from low-income families. Our school has over 500 students, and only has kindergarten through second-grade. All of my kids come to school very eager to learn.
My Project
In first grade we are building the foundation for reading and writing. To do so, we teach phonics extensively. I want all my students to have the basic foundational skills in phonics mastered so they are prepared and have the confidence to read and write whatever they choose. To do that they need the best and most engaging phonics games and activities to work with during our literacy block. Unfortunately, as a young teacher, I only have access to a limited number of resources, some of which are rather outdated and not engaging enough for my students.
With these phonics games and activities my students will be able to strengthen their phonics skills. These resources will be used daily during our literacy block. Each day, students do word work, whether it is working with high frequency words, finding beginning and ending parts in words, practicing writing word families, or sounding out words to spell them correctly. These resources will be an integral part of our literacy block.
This project will make a huge difference in our classroom.
Strong phonics knowledge is essential for both reading and writing. My students will become better at both as they use these resources daily. These resources are fun and engaging and will encourage a desire to continue to learn. Most importantly, as their knowledge grows they will become more empowered as individuals.
