Please, put books in my students' hands! Although read-alouds are wonderful, with the rigor of the Common Core Standards, students need extended texts in their hands. Students are required to refer to and use evidence from texts to show their comprehension. 25 students just can't share one book!
I teach fourth grade at a high poverty, high ELL-populated school.
I have found through this last year as I've implemented Common Core that these students need to have high-interest texts in front of them (not just students listening to the texts) for a better understanding of what they are reading. My English Language Learners especially need to see it and hear it together to make the connection.
My Project
Common Core suggests reading one extended text per quarter, which is a book that is studied, analyzed, and heavily discussed as a class. I hope to have class sets of a few high-interest extended texts that we can dive into deeper together through close reading. These books would be used year after year! I used all three of the books I'm requesting as read-aloud studies last school year. Who Is Neil Armstrong? and Sign of the Beaver integrate our Science and Social Studies content as we also learn the reading skills and strategies of the Common Core. Chronicles of Narnia is a rigorous text that teach the values of family and forgiveness. I will be able to cover ALL of the Reading Standards in each extended text. I hope you will consider donating!
Your donation will not only impact students in this upcoming school year, but for years to come as I use the books with each new class every year.
So many Language Arts Common Core Standards require students to refer to the text and provide evidence from the text. Putting books in the students' hands is just the way to help them achieve these standards!
